Admission to the Teacher Education Program

All students interested in the Hendrix Teacher Education Licensure Program are urged to attend an annual meeting held at the beginning of each academic year.  Students interested in teacher licensure should complete an informal admission process to the Teacher Education Program. This process includes completing an on-line application and having an individual interview with a member of the Hendrix Education Department. At this interview, all requirements necessary for licensure are explained to the student.

During the spring semester prior to the academic year of student teaching, the teacher licensure candidate should make formal application to the Teacher Education Committee for admission to the Hendrix Teacher Education Program. At this time, the student must be able to meet the following criteria:

  • Achieve a passing score on the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators tests (Reading, Writing, and Mathematics) or meet ACT and SAT score requirements (ACT composite score of 24 and reading, math and writing scores of 22 or SAT composite score of 1650 and reading, math and writing scores of 510).
  • Have a "C" or better in all education courses.
  • Receive favorable outcomes from background check and child maltreatment checks.
  • Have and maintain at least a 2.7 cumulative GPA.  Likewise, a candidate must have and maintain a 2.7 GPA in his/her major.  If not, the candidate cannot reapply until the next spring semester.
  • Have a favorable recommendation submitted from the candidate's major department.
  • Have a plan to complete all methods courses prior to the student teaching experience and complete the teacher education program for licensure and college graduation requirements by the end of his/her senior year.
  • Demonstrate those character traits (such as integrity, dependability, and personal acceptance of other persons regardless of race, sex, age, religion, culture, or handicap) that are deemed essential in a secondary teacher.
  • Prepare an e-folio based on the Teacher Education Committee guidelines and submit the e-folio to the Teacher Education Committee for review and approval. This process includes the successful completion of an interview with the Teacher Education Committee.

Upon the completion of formal admission to the program (through the junior e-folio process), the chair of the student's major department and the student's advisor are officially notified of the student's interest in teacher education. Licensure requirements and student files will be kept in the Education Department.

Requirements for Initial Teaching License

During the senior year, students enrolled in the Teacher Education Program must complete the specified education courses, including student teaching. At the completion of the student teaching experience, the Teacher Education Committee will review the record and e-folio of each candidate before recommending to the State of Arkansas that an initial teaching license be issued. This record will include, but is not limited to, the following:

  • The recommendations of the student's cooperating teacher and the Hendrix supervisor of the student teaching experience.
  • The applicant's academic record, which must show at least a 2.7 cumulative grade average.
  • The completion of all Hendrix College requirements for a bachelor of arts degree.
  • The completion of all course requirements of the State of Arkansas for the appropriate initial teaching license.
  • The student's completed e-folio.
  • The successful completion of an interview with the members of the Teacher Education Committee at the end of student teaching.
  • The successful completion of all of the required Praxis II tests (NOTE: See the Education Department or www.ets.org/praxis for a list of minimum scores for the Praxis tests.)

After the completion of all requirements, the student may make application to the Hendrix Teacher Licensure Officer for approval for the initial license. The Teacher Licensure Officer will sign the Arkansas teacher licensure application only when the candidate has been approved by the Teacher Education Committee and when all requirements are met for licensure and for graduation.
