Hendrix-in-Taipei (Taiwan)

An immersive and intensive month studying Chinese language and culture in Taiwan’s capital city.

Hendrix-in-Taipei is a Hendrix-Murphy Foundation Summer Language Program coordinated by Dr. Liu. Students will take Chinese language classes at the University of Taipei in Taipei, Taiwan.  The program does not require any Chinese language study before departure.

Program Overview

  • Four weeks of Chinese language courses

  • Trip to Tainan (if time allows)
  • Trip to a nearby town
  • Themed cultural visits of Taipei (The Confucius Temple, National Palace Museum, etc.)
  • Afternoon language/cultural activities (such as movies and karaoke)
  • Students also have the option of arriving early or leaving late for extra days at their own expense to visit other famous attractions or countries

Courses

All courses are Chinese language courses taught by faculty members from the University of Taipei. Students earn two credits in four weeks. The program takes place from Mid-May to Mid-June.

Grades/Credits

Participants with a “C” or better in Taipei courses will receive two Hendrix course credits and a Global Awareness (GA) Odyssey credit, upon completion of the standard Odyssey requirements.  Under regular circumstances, only one of the two credits will count towards a Chinese minor.  Please note that completion of the program does not fulfill the LA Capacity for graduation.

Estimated Costs

The eight students accepted into the program will receive full scholarships covering the Hendrix-in-Taipei tuition plus room and board as well as a stipend for meals and weekend travel.  Student costs include:

  • Round-trip airfare: approximately $1,800-$2,000
  • Pocket money: approx. $1000
  • Travel to/from the U.S. airport
  • Passport costs

The Hendrix-Murphy Foundation has a small discretionary fund to help students with demonstrated financial need meet the expected costs of Summer Language Programs. As a rule of thumb, if you are Pell-grant eligible you may qualify for this assistance. To request assistance, please contact Sarah Engeler-Young at the Hendrix-Murphy Foundation after you are selected for the program.
