An immersive month studying Chinese language and culture typically offered every other year. Stay tuned for updates for summer 2025!

Shanghai

The China Summer Language Institute in Shanghai is a Hendrix-Murphy Foundation program coordinated by Dr. Wenjia Liu in conjunction with East China Normal University in Shanghai, China. The program does not require any Chinese language study before departure.

Program Overview

The program takes place from early July to early August and includes:

  • Four weeks of Chinese language courses
  • Trip to Beijing
  • Trip to a nearby city
  • Themed cultural visits of Shanghai (The Bund, Shanghai Museum, etc.)
  • Afternoon language/cultural activities (such as movies and karaoke)
  • Students also have the option of arriving early or leaving late for extra days at their own expense to visit famous attractions

Courses

The program consists of 4-5 weeks of intensive Chinese language classes. All courses are Chinese language courses taught by faculty members from the East China Normal University. Students earn two Hendrix course credits.

Grades/Credits

Participants with a “C” or better in Shanghai courses will receive two Hendrix course credits and a Global Awareness Odyssey credit (upon completion of the normal Odyssey requirements). Under regular circumstances, only one of the two credits will count towards a Chinese minor. Please note that completion of the program does not fulfill the LA capacity for graduation.

Estimated Costs

The 8 students accepted into the program receive full scholarships covering the Institute's tuition, room and board, plus a stipend for meals and weekend travel. Student costs include:

  • Round-trip airfare: approximately $1800-$2000
    • Hendrix-Murphy will cover $300 for each student if the airfare is above $1500
  • China visa plus visa agency fee: $140 + $150
  • Passport photos: $30
  • Pocket money: approx. $1000
  • Travel to/from the U.S. airport

The Hendrix-Murphy Foundation has a small discretionary fund to help students with demonstrated financial need meet the out-of-pocket expenses for Summer Language Programs. If needed, please contact Sarah Engeler-Young at the Hendrix-Murphy Foundation after you are selected for the program.
