Description

The Department of Languages offers a major and a minor in Spanish. The program is designed to develop written and oral communication skills, to promote global awareness through the study of different cultures and peoples, and to encourage aesthetic appreciation through the study of literature.

Note(s):

The department encourages all students to have a study-abroad experience. Some things to remember include that for a major and a minor, at least half of the courses taken to fulfill those requirements must be taken in residence. Courses taken abroad that transfer as SPAN courses must be based on literary texts, the analysis of narratives with literary approaches, linguistics, film, and other cultural productions with relation to the language. If a student has not taken SPAN 210 at Hendrix, a course in conversation or basic grammar could transfer as an equivalent. A maximum of two 200 level courses can be counted towards the major. Courses taken in Spanish but in other disciplines transfer as courses in those disciplines and do not count towards a Spanish major or minor.
