LITR 232
Contemporary French Film
This course entails a detailed look at recent French cinema through its analyses of notable and representative French films that have appeared since 1980. As this class is offered at the 300 level as well, the central expectation is that students at the 200 level will do less advanced work than the 300-level students. Papers and presentations for the 200 level students will be shorter and less involved. In terms of assessment, 200-level students will be expected to delve less deeply into the material and demonstrate a less sophisticated level of understanding and synthesis than 300-level students. The learning goals will address these distinctions: expectations and outcomes for 200 level students will include less advanced learning through shorter, less sophisticated readings and presentations. Students will be allowed to take the class only once (it may not be taken a second time as LITR 332 or as FREN 232 or FREN 332). Prerequisite: Sophomore standing or permission of the instructor

Holocaust Lit: French/Translation
This course offers a description of life during the Holocaust through the reading of testimonial texts originally written in French. We survey the events and questions leading up to the Holocaust and attempt to place them in a historical, religious, and political frame. Through the texts of witness-authors, we consider facets of the human tragedy that the Holocaust constitutes and how it was lived on a daily basis. The course thus studies individual experiences of the historical event that remains the paradigm of genocides of the XXth century. *Taught in English.
