Catalog 2024-2025

C.7.a. Hendrix-Murphy Foundation Programs in Literature and Language

The Hendrix-Murphy Foundation provides a variety of programming to enhance and enrich literature and language throughout the college. Its Distinguished Visitors Program brings to campus eminent writers and scholars who interact closely with students, visit classes, advise projects, and give public lectures. The foundation also sponsors the Creative Writing Program, the Writing Center, literary research trips, language enrichment activities, summer language immersion programs, study abroad in literature and language, and experiences in dramaturgy, playwriting, and the study of dramatic literature. All students and faculty may apply for support of individually designed projects involving study, research, practice, and service in literature and language.

In addition, the Murphy Scholars Program in Literature and Language offers a select cohort of students from all majors the opportunity to go deeper and study more intensively in literature and language. Thirty Murphy Scholars are inducted every year, and they remain in the program until graduation, receiving dedicated resources in the form of mentorship and a study-travel allowance to pursue their literary and language-related interests. They take Oxford-style tutorials in the departments of English, Languages, and Theatre Arts and Dance; carry out projects in literature and language; and bond as a community of scholars on campus.

The Bertie Wilson Murphy Building serves as a center for these programs, providing on-campus lodging for the Foundation’s and other college programs’ visiting faculty, writers, and lecturers and a seminar room and library for those visitors to meet informally with students and faculty. Other building events include a student reading series, informal craft discussions, book groups, writing workshops, study hall evenings, and Murphy Scholar gatherings.
