    Note(s):

    The department encourages all students to have a study-abroad experience. Students are strongly encouraged to take courses on China in all disciplines (e.g., Chinese language, Political Science, Business, International Relations, etc.) while studying abroad.

    Students pursuing additional coursework while studying abroad or at other institutions may substitute up to 2 courses to fulfill the requirements for the minor with approval of the Chinese Program Coordinator.

    Elementary Chinese I

    An introduction to spoken and written Mandarin Chinese, this course addresses the four skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing and includes an introduction to Chinese culture.
    CHIN 120

    Elementary Chinese II

    An introduction to spoken and written Mandarin Chinese, this course continues development of the four skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing and includes an introduction to Chinese culture. Prerequisite: CHIN 110 or the equivalent

    Chinese Martial Arts Novels & Films

    This course is taught completely in English with no prerequisite. In this course students study a specific genre and motif, “gods, demons and the supernatural,” in Chinese traditional and contemporary literature. By reading this genre and motif, this course provides students a strong foundation to understand Chinese traditional cultures through Chinese traditional thoughts and religious beliefs, as well as to comprehend modern Chinese cultures which are influenced by both Chinese traditional cultures and Western ideologies.     Intermediate Chinese I

    A continuation of CHIN 120 Elementary Chinese II. The course follows the functional approach to language learning in stressing the students’ ability to communicate effectively in a broad range of everyday situations. Our goals are to develop students’ listening, speaking, reading and writing proficiency in intermediate Chinese. Prerequisite: CHIN 120 or the equivalent

    Intermediate Chinese II

    A continuation of CHIN 210 Intermediate Chinese I. The course follows the functional approach to language learning in stressing the students’ ability to communicate effectively in a broad range of everyday situations. Our goals are to develop student’s’ listening, speaking, reading and writing proficiency in intermediate Chinese. Prerequisite: CHIN 210 or the equivalent

    Gods Demons and the Supernatural

    This course studies a specific genre and common motifs, "gods, demons and the supernatural", in Chinese traditional and contemporary literature. "Literature" includes works of poetry, philosophical writings, classical tales, vernacular short stories, fiction, and drama. Through reading this particular genre, students understand and critically analyze Chinese literature in its own historical, cultural, social and intellectual background. This course is taught completely in English. Cross-listed as ASIA 290.

    Topics in Chinese Literature

    A topics course in Chinese literature. This course explores various genres, movements, literary periods or topics in Chinese literature. This course can be repeated for additional credits as long as the section topics are different. Consult the online course schedule for information about the topics currently scheduled to be taught.     Advanced Chinese I

    A continuation of CHIN 220 Intermediate Chinese II. The course aims to improve the abilities of oral and written expression and listening and reading comprehension. The goal is to function as a bridge to authentic Chinese texts. Prerequisite: CHIN 220 or equivalent
