Not Sure Where to Start?

One size does NOT fit all! Your journey at Hendrix may not look like the plan below, and that’s OK. These are some suggested activities to help you hit the ground running and finish strong as you grow in your Hendrix Career Competencies. No matter what you plan to do after graduation (and even if you haven’t formed that plan), Career Services can help! 

FIRST YEAR

  • Check your email EVERY day. 

  • Read Hendrix Today AT LEAST 2-3 times/week 

  • Follow Hendrix Career Services on Instagram 

  • Meet with your professors outside of class

  • Meet with Career Services to explore majors and career options

  • Get to know your advisor

  • Join a campus organization or start volunteering with a local non profit; find more volunteer opportunities HERE.

  • Meet with Career Services to explore internship options 

  • Participate in an internship this summer (after your FR year) 

  • Update or create your resume with our " First Look" peer resume review service

  • Begin making alumni connections through FACT Fridays (watch Hendrix Today or our Instagram feed for info!)

SOPHOMORE

  • Meet with Career Service to explore your chosen major and how it relates to careers 

  • Visit Focus 2 Career to organize your interests, values, skills, and career readiness to help you choose a major and consider future occupations.

  • Participate in Career Term (January) 

  • Build more alumni connections through Career Term, HCAN, and FACT Fridays 

  • Visit the Study Abroad Office and/or the Study Abroad Fair 

  • Volunteer in the community; find more volunteer opportunities HERE

  • Update your resume 

  • This summer is the PERFECT time for an internship! Meet with us to dream and plan!

  • EVST, HESC, and SJSA students…you will need to complete an internship before graduation 

  • Meet with Rynnett Clark if interested in teaching as a career 

  • Explore undergraduate research opportunities if considering medical school or graduate school 

JUNIOR

  • Participate in an internship (perhaps your 2nd or 3rd)

  • Visit Focus 2 Career to organize your interests, values, skills, and career readiness to help you choose a major and consider future occupations.

  • If planning to attend graduate school, meet with your advisor to develop a concrete plan 

  • Continue building alumni connections 

  • Become a leader in one or more campus organizations. 

  • Explore graduate programs - we can help if you're not sure where to start!

  • Join a professional association if graduate or professional school is in your future 

  • Regularly read the professional journals and news of your chosen field 

  • If a pre-med, do medical school interview preparation and work on personal statements with Pre-Med Advising Committee and your advisor 

  • Peruse job ads for your target profession(s) and notice what qualifications are needed and what keywords are used 

SENIOR

  • Begin job search and begin preparing your application materials (let us help you!)

  • Visit Focus 2 Career to organize your interests, values, skills, and career readiness to help you choose a major and consider occupations.

  • Update Resume (Do you need a CV?) 

  • Practice writing a cover letter 

  • Schedule a mock interview 

  • Have Career Services review your application materials before you submit them 

  • Participate in a final internship or research opportunity
