This class examines the existentialist trend in French theory and fiction. This course is taught in English and is cross-listed as FREN 202. Students enrolling in this course work entirely in English with the expectation that student knowledge of literary theory is at the second-year level.

Students pursue in-depth exploration of a topic in literature that has been translated from its original language. The course, taught in one-hour weekly sessions, has a low faculty-to-student ratio (1:2 or 1:3) and stresses, writing, reading, peer critiquing, and oral presentation skills. It culminates in a group activity such as a field trip, student symposium, engaged-learning project, or gathering with other tutorial pairs.

This course studies the various theories pertaining to the translation of literature. Cross-listed as FREN 461. Prerequisite: Students should have completed the LA language capacity requirement in any language.

This course studies the Spanish Civil War using films and texts set during this period. We study not only what happened in Spain from 1936-1939, but also the circumstances that led to the war and the long-term consequences of this conflict. Historical information from before, during and after the war as well as the ideologies of both sides as expressed in songs, anthems and propaganda are examined. Cross-Listed as SPAN 488
