Dr. George Sawaya, a board certified obstetrician-gynecologist, holds a joint appointment in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at UCSF. He is a generalist and provides OB/GYN care at San Francisco General Hospital where he directs the Colposcopy and Cervical Dysplasia Clinic. His current research is in cervical cancer screening with particular interest in new technologies, cost-effectiveness and utility, novel approaches to population-based screening and risk communication. He has been awarded a Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award from the National Cancer Institute to study cervical cancer screening outcomes in older women and currently serves on the cervical cancer guidelines committee for the American Cancer Society. In 1985, Dr. Sawaya became the first of 27 Hendrix graduates to receive a Watson Fellowship, financing a year of studying tropical diseases in the United Kingdom, Switzerland, France and West Africa. He received a degree in chemistry from Hendrix and a medical degree in 1990 from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.
