Abstract / Full Description

This Crossing offers students an opportunity to explore three separate ways of exploring stories of diverse groups of individuals. It is the nature of Oral Histories, Testimonials and Solo Performance and Documentary Performance to tell the stories of those who have been marginalized. The marginalization of these individuals is based on a variety of factors; gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, political association, and ethnicity are some examples.  The Examined Lives curriculum studies Testimonials, Oral Histories, and Solo Performance and Documentary Drama.  The aim is twofold: to examine stories of those who have been marginalized and to develop sensitivity to their paths in life and, in the course of examination, to gain insight into the student's individual narrative. Students from vastly different areas of interest are able to find a connection to each of the courses.  The Crossing, through interdisciplinary study, allows the students to combine the diverse methodologies in a final project of original performance.
