Description

Hendrix College is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) for the preparation of secondary teachers. In order to be recommended for teacher licensure, students must complete all Hendrix College graduation requirements, all departmental requirements, all subject matter preparation requirements, and all state requirements. A listing of these requirements may be obtained from the Education Department.

        Admission to the Teacher Education Program

        Students interested in teacher licensure should complete the on-line interest form and meet with a members of the Hendrix Education Department. During this meeting, all requirements necessary for licensure are explained to the student.  

        During the spring semester prior to the academic year of student teaching, the student should make formal application to the Teacher Education Committee for admission to the Hendrix Teacher Education Program. At this time, the student must meet the following criteria: 

        • Achieve a passing score on the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators tests (Reading, Writing, and Mathematics) or meet ACT and SAT score requirements (ACT composite score of 24 or higher, and reading, math and/or writing scores of 22 or SAT composite score of 1650 or higher, and reading, math and/or writing scores of at least 510). 
        • Have a "C" or better in all education courses.  
        • Receive favorable outcomes from background check and child maltreatment checks.  
        • Have and maintain at least a 2.7 cumulative GPA.  Likewise, a candidate must have and maintain a 2.7 GPA in his/her major.  If not, the candidate cannot reapply until the next spring semester. 
        • Have a favorable recommendation submitted from the candidate's major department. 
        • Have a plan to complete all methods courses prior to the student teaching experience and complete the teacher education program for licensure and college graduation requirements by the end of his/her senior year. 
        • Demonstrate those character traits (such as integrity, dependability, and personal acceptance of other persons regardless of race, sex, age, religion, culture, or disability) that are deemed essential in a teacher. 
        • Prepare an e-folio based on the Teacher Education Committee guidelines and submit the e-folio to the Teacher Education Committee for review and approval. This process includes the successful completion of an interview with the Teacher Education Committee. 

        Upon the completion of formal admission to the program (through the junior e-folio process), the chair of the student's major department and the student's advisor are officially notified of the student's interest in teacher education. Licensure requirements and student files will be kept in the Education Department. 

        Requirements for Initial Teaching License

        During the senior year, students enrolled in the Teacher Education Program must complete the specified education courses, including student teaching. At the completion of the student teaching experience, the Teacher Education Committee will review the record and e-folio of each candidate before recommending to the State of Arkansas that first time standard license in their area be issued. This record will include, but is not limited to, the following: 

        • The recommendations of the student's cooperating teacher and the Hendrix supervisor of the student teaching experience. 
        • The applicant's academic record, which must show at least a 2.7 cumulative grade average. 
        • The completion of all Hendrix College requirements for a bachelor of arts degree. 
        • The completion of all course requirements of the State of Arkansas for the appropriate first time standard license. 
        • The student's completed senior e-folio. 
        • The successful completion of an interview with the members of the Teacher Education Committee at the end of student teaching. 
        • The successful completion of all of the required Praxis Subject Assessment tests (NOTE: See the Education Department or www.ets.org/praxis for a list of minimum scores for the Praxis tests.) 

        After the completion of all requirements, the student may make application to the Hendrix Teacher Licensure Officer for approval for the first time license. The Teacher Licensure Officer will sign the Arkansas teacher licensure application only when the candidate has been approved by the Teacher Education Committee and when all requirements are met for licensure and for graduation.

        Foundations in Education

        Foundations in Education surveys the history of American education from the Colonial Era to the present. We consider the changing character of education in the context of broader social, economic, and political developments in the United States. Focusing on the evolution of the public school system, we examine how race, ethnicity, class, gender, culture, and religion have shaped educational experiences. This course provides students with both historical knowledge of major trends and themes in American education and an appreciation of historical analysis as a tool for understanding current and future educational developments.

        Educational Psychology

        Emphasis is placed on selected aspects of the learner, the learning process, and the learning situation, related to middle school and secondary education. This course may include a field experience. Prerequisite: EDUC 205 recommended.

        Social and Behavioral Analysis SB
        EDUC 360

        Inclusive Education

        A study of the philosophical, legal, and social foundations of an inclusive approach to adolescent education based on the belief that all children can learn. Emphasis is placed on national standards and state frameworks for developmentally appropriate practices, curriculum, assessment, and environment. Field experience focuses on specialized teaching in the middle and high school setting. Prerequisite: EDUC 205 and EDUC 220.

        Methd Second Sch-Eng Lang Art

        Study of special methods of teaching secondary school English Language Arts to students of diverse backgrounds and abilities. This course emphasizes higher order thinking skills, instructional technology, current research, classroom climate, and micro-teaching. Includes a field experience. Prerequisites: EDUC 360.

        Methods Second Sch-Soc Studies

        Study of special methods of teaching secondary school social studies to students of diverse backgrounds and abilities. This course emphasizes higher order thinking skills, instructional technology, current research, classroom climate, and micro-teaching. Students study innovative and creative strategies for teaching social studies in the secondary school including content and concept development and their application in the social studies classroom. Includes a field experience. Prerequisites: EDUC 360.

        EDUC 438

        STEM Methods

        This course combines a practicum in a local, public school with discussions and experiences to promote the development of the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively teach in science, technology, and/or mathematics classrooms. Students learn both content specific and integrated STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) methods, in addition to observing and teaching in a science, technology, and/or mathematics class under the supervision of a licensed teacher and the methods instructor. Prerequisite: EDUC 360

        A two-week, full-day course during the student teaching semester. As an introduction to grades 4-12 student teaching, students examine the implications of classroom practices such as classroom management, differentitated instruction and assessment, Program for Effective Teaching, the student teaching evaluation process, as well as lesson and unit planning. Legal and ethical issues in teaching are also a part of the course. Prerequisites: Completion of all methods courses.
