Course Planning

Classics - Where to Start?

The course planning advice here is limited to completing this major which is just one piece of the overall Hendrix College degree requirements.  For a full description of degree requirements see the Catalog.

Where should I start if I am just sampling this subject as a non-major?

  • All 200-level Classics courses (CLAS) are appropriate for first-year students interested in the study of Greek and Roman antiquity. These require no prior knowledge of Latin or Greek.
  • The 100-level sequences in Latin (LATI) and Ancient Greek (GREE) are appropriate to begin the study of these languages. The introductory Greek sequence is offered inconsistently. Please consult the Chair of the Classics Program for timing.

Where should I start if I might use this as part of a major or as a potential major?

All entering students who have prior experience with Latin should take a placement test. The Language Placement Exercise is given during fall orientation. Placement recommendations will be available before fall registration is complete and can be found on the student’s Placement Records on the CampusWeb site.

  • Unless these recommendations indicate otherwise, students should enroll in Fundamentals of Latin I (LATI 110).
  • Any student who is placed in Fundamentals of Latin II (LATI 120) or above, and completes that higher level course with a grade of C or better, will automatically receive college credit Fundamentals of Latin I (Latin 110).
  • Students who test out of Fundamentals of Latin II (LATI 120) will have fulfilled the language capacity requirement (LA).

Where should I start if I have some experience in this discipline before college?

All entering students who have prior experience with Latin should take a placement exercise. The Language Placement Exercise is given during fall orientation.

  • Placement recommendations will be available before fall registration is complete. Unless these recommendations indicate otherwise, students should enroll in Fundamentals of Latin I (LATI 110).
  • Students with prior experience in Ancient Greek should contact the chair of the Classics program to schedule a placement exercise.

When should I declare a major?

  •  All students must declare a major by March 1st of their sophomore year.
