Course planning advice here is limited to majors. Where should I start if I might use this as part of a major or as a potential major?

For the Theatre Arts major:
  • All 100-level theatre courses are appropriate: Introduction to Theatre (TART 100, general elective), Voice and Movement for the Stage (TART 135, movement elective), Acting Fundamentals (TART 140, required), Design Fundamentals (TART 185, general elective) Note: Introduction to Theatre (TART 100) provides an overview of the discipline.
  • Any of the following movement elective courses in dance are appropriate: Modern Dance Technique (DANC 215), Ballet Technique (DANC 216), Jazz Dance Technique (DANC 217).
  • Either of the 200-level technical theatre classes will fulfill a requirement for the major: Scenery & Lighting (TART 260) or Costume & Make-up (TART 280).
  • Well prepared students might consider starting with Script Analysis Fundamentals (TART 210, required) or Beginning Playwriting (TART 290, general elective). Please consult with the course instructor or the Department Chair for guidance.
  • All students, regardless of background, are encouraged to participate in theatre productions (aka Hendrix Players). Productions may carry Theatre Practicum credits (TARA P21-P24). Auditions and Crew Calls will be announced at the beginning of the fall semester.

Where should I start if I have some experience in this discipline before college?

  • It is recommended that any student with some theatre experience take a 100- or 200-level class in an area of theatre in which they have no experience. Please consult with the course instructor or the Department Chair for guidance.
  • Students with previous experience could consider Script Analysis Fundamentals (TART 210) or Beginning Playwriting (TART 290).
  • For concurrent high school / college credits – please consult with the Department Chair.

When should I declare a major?

  • All students must declare a major by the deadline to drop a course without a grade during the Fall of the sophomore year.
