Theatre Arts Major - Planning

The course planning advice here is limited to completing this major which is just one piece of the overall Hendrix College degree requirements.  For a full description of degree requirements see the Catalog.

Possible Degree Path – starting in the first year. The following is a typical major plan. This is not the only way forward. Please consult with your advisor to create your unique path.

  Fall Semester Spring Semester
First Year

At least two TART courses at the 100- or 200- level

Possibly one theatre activity experience (TARA)

Sophomore

3-4 courses at the 200- or 300- level

If not taken previously, these should include:

  • Theatre Production: Scenery and Lighting (TART 260, fall)
  • Script Analysis (TART 210, spring)
  • Costume and Makeup (TART 280, fall)
  • At least two theatre activity experiences (TARA)
Junior

2-3 courses total at the 300- or 400- level including:

  • Production Design (TART 450 spring)
  • One theatre activity experiences (TARA)

Possibly: Either History of Theatre and Dramatic Lit. I (TART 310) or History of Theatre and Dramatic Lit. II (TART 311)

Senior

2-3 courses total at the 300- or 400- level including:

  • Stage Directing (TART 430, fall)
  • Senior Seminar (TART 497, spring)
  • Last theatre activity experiences (4th out of 4 TARA credit)

If not already completed:

  • History of Theatre and Dramatic Lit. I  (TART 310) or  History of Theatre and Dramatic Lit. II (TART 311)

  • Theatre Production: Scenery and Lighting (TART 260, fall) OR Costume and Makeup (TART 280, fall)
  • Script Analysis (TART 210, spring)
  • At least two theatre activity experiences (TARA)
Junior

3-4 courses total at the 300- or 400-  level including:

  • Theatre Production: Scenery and Lighting (TART 260, fall) OR Costume and Makeup (TART 280, fall)
  • Production Design (TART 450 spring)
  • One theatre activity experiences (TARA)

Possibly: Either History of Theatre (TART 310) or Dramatic Lit. (TART 311)

Senior

2-3 courses total at the 300- or 400- level including:

  • Stage Directing (TART 430, fall)
  • Senior Seminar (TART 497, spring)
  • Last theatre activity experiences (4th out of 4 TARA credit)

If not already completed:

  • History of Theatre or Dramatic Lit. (TART 310 or 311)

Planning Recommendations: Production Design (TART 450) should be completed before the senior year to prepare for more advanced work.

Capstone Comments: The capstone in theatre has three components. The first two parts are individual work where students must write and present a manifesto for theatre. The third capstone piece is Senior Seminar (TART 497) where the senior majors produce a play.
