Course Planning

Sociology & Anthropology - Where to Start?

The course planning advice here is limited to completing this major which is just one piece of the overall Hendrix College degree requirements.  For a full description of degree requirements see the Catalog.

Where should I start if I am just sampling this subject as a non-major?

  • Any 100- or 200- level course in Sociology or Anthropology, EXCEPT Social Statistics (SOCI 210), is suitable for both intended majors and non-majors sampling the disciplines.

Where should I start if I might use this as part of a major or as a potential major?

  • We strongly recommend taking all required 100-level courses within the first two years of the major to provide a solid foundation for upper-level course work.

Where should I start if I have some experience in this discipline before college?

  • Students with some background in Sociology or Anthropology should begin with any 100- or 200- level course, except Social Statistics (SOCI 210).

When should I declare a major?

  • All students must declare a major by March 1st of their sophomore year.
