Student Senate

Minutes 11.11.08

Agenda

Tuesday November 11th, 2008

6:30 p.m. Mills Library

I. Call to Order

II. Special Business

  • Jacob proposes amending the constitution so that the Student Activity fee does not go to any football activities in the future (such as SoCo or some other event funding tail gate parties and etc.) so the money to fund football events won’t be taken from our tuition but rather athletic funding.
  • Karla: announcement this afternoon letting people know President Cloyd had an unanticipated surgery—he should be out most of the rest of this week. Let’s sign a card for him! If there are president specific concerns, holler at Karla first, and then Ellis Arnold.
-Senate at Karla’s house! Holiday invitation—Student Senate goes Green! Recycled gift/something green/less than 5 bucks—Secret Santa. Please RSVP!!!

III. Announcements and Constituent Concerns

  • Coat racks in the sun porch or other buildings around campus?
  • Glass recycling still needed in Raney—see the ECC report below!
  • Some people don’t understand why we need an NS and NS-L credit?
  • Small organizations need to pay for security? For instance, the Galloway event this Friday that is non-alcoholic. If an event is open to the whole campus and everyone can bring a guest—not knowing how many people are going to come—these types of events require security.
  • Jim is going to talk with Rick Sublett and standardize the requirements for such events. But what about events like the SoCo Walk-In Movie that doesn’t require security and is open to anyone? How is this different than another event somewhere else on campus…

IV. Departmental Liaison Reports

  • WAC advisory meeting on Thursday! Holler at Mac.
-Towel policy—need an ID to get one. Think we’re going to steal one? What about when people aren’t at the desk?
-The number of student workers at the WAC has declined, so older people are being employed. There have been complaints about students not showing up for work—should students still work there?
-Jacob hears there are people who are assigned as substitutes for those who cannot show up
-Please fix the lines in the sand volleyball court!
  • Judy Jones—Martin Hall: recycling is now in your sun porch! Take care of your receptacles.
-Trash can: 14 should be available in your hall.

V. Committee Reports

  • Media Committee with Fraser Holmes
    • High five Profile crew! Wonderful publication this past Friday.
    • KHDX DJs can finally get into the studio!
    • Aonian is on its way!
  • Multicultural Development Committee with Ashley Easter
    • This is International Week!
    • Today was the reception!
    • Thursday: movie showing in the Burrow at 6:00 p.m.: Everything is Illuminated
    • Friday: Talent Show at 7:00 p.m. in the Burrow
    • Saturday: Food Bizarre at 4:00 p.m. in Hulen Ballroom
  • Social Committee with Jake Eddington
    • Congratulations to Alex and BJ for winning the first Trivia Night!
    • Holiday Themed Trivia night on Dec. 4!
    • Saturday, Nov. 22nd: SoCo 54! T-Shirts are AWESOME!!! You know you want metallic gold on your body.
  • Volunteer Action Committee with Larnie Campbell
    • Larnie couldn’t make it… she apologizes! Dan GR filled us in:
    • Executive board dinner happened this past Saturday, so there wasn’t a Service Saturday.
    • 2 Service Days this week:
Friday: 5:45-8 p.m. going to Independent Living Services—play BINGO with special needs adults! Meet at the bell if you’d like to come!
Saturday: here in Trieschmann at 1:00-3:30 p.m.—prepping materials to make hats for chemotherapy patients
  • Campus Kitty with Alex Graddy-Reed
    • Holiday Bizarre: Dec 9
    • Faculty Talent Show: Dec 8
  • Environmental Concerns Committee with Wendell Cathcart and Katherine Roehm
    • Glass recycling expansion is coming soon!
    • 3 projects underway:
      Composting!
      Mike Flory—Biodegradable burrow cups!
Signs for recycling bins to educate what students can and cannot dispense.
  • Academic Policy with Samantha Bode
    • A few tweaks to the Odyssey Program—they want to require people who are studying abroad to do a reflection paper/journal. This is a bit silly since the students are away reflecting every day. Faculty needs to work on this.
  • Student and Academic Concerns Committee with Samantha Bode and Jayce Hafner
    • THIS Saturday, November 15th: Road Clean Up! Meet at 10 a.m. at the bell. E-mail Jayce if you cannot come because we need a jacket count (yes, we’re going to get to wear those cool orange jackets!). Actually, go ahead and e-mail her anyway whether you’re going or not just in case!
    • Anyone interested in participating in the Constitutional Review committee? Holler.
  • Finance Committee with Alex Graddy-Reed
    • Hardin Hall proposal (SEE BELOW)—PASSED: $542.40!
  • Communications Committee with Kristi Vo
    • Meeting Thursday at 11:00 a.m.! I’ll be waiting for you in the sun porch.
  • Committee on Committees with Nick Balée
    • Student Handbook review for changes we would like to make to it. There are several ambiguities that need to be revised—students’ rights committee coming soon?
    • Short cut/“Student handbook guide for dummies”—kinda like cliff notes!
    • Almost time for shirttails committee and welcome week!
  • Executive Committee with BJ Fogleman
    • CRL is still in the works. We’re looking for the constitution to see who needs to be on it. Mac is meeting with John Omolo so he’ll see about it!
    • Profile Article about senate??? There was an anonymous senator (Jacob…) who wrote an article about us. If you haven’t read it, you should. Sometimes it may not seem like Senate is doing a whole lot, but BJ and the execs pretty much eat and breathe senate. Lots of stuff happen in the background besides just what happens at the meetings. The article doesn’t pick out anyone in particular. If you feel like something is wrong or not sufficient enough, bring it up in the meeting. That’s what we’re here for. BJ thinks the athletics idea is great though. You were each elected into this—we need to stay here as long as each concern entails.
    • Get your notes out. Impeachments perhaps? Come on guys… 5 or 6 lined notes? Not getting your notes out until after the deadline?!?!?! Not cool.
    • For an institution that provides internet for a group of people, a virus protection is necessary—at least ran once a month. Things will go into quarantine until your computer has been updated. See last week’s notes for more details on Sam Nichols (IT) goods.

VII. New Business

  • If your hall (or other residential living space) needs to request money, it needs to go through CRL before it goes to FinCom.
  • Couch Hall legitimately handled their election. High five team! (Holler at Lauren for the results.) Filing is open for ECC and CRL reps.
  • Light Walk next Tuesday at 5:15 p.m.! Female student needed? Holler at Jim or Karla if interested.
  • Student Affairs is offering shuttles for students to the airport for breaks! Only $10 each way, and it can be billed to your account. Sign-ups in Buhler! Pass the word around!
