WHY STUDENTS CHOOSE HENDRIX
Hendrix students come to live and learn in an environment that challenges conventional wisdom and common assumptions. We value the individualism and the distinctiveness that each person brings to our community. Whether you are interested in our extraordinary undergraduate research opportunities, our thriving social life, our nationally known faculty, or our students’ academic achievements, you are sure to find what you are looking for at Hendrix.
Hendrix Brings the Liberal Arts to Life
Nurturing intellectual curiosity, providing the classical liberal arts perspective, demanding competence, and encouraging individual initiative ... those are the essentials of the Hendrix experience. You won't be on campus long before you detect a common passion for these things.
At Hendrix learning is interactive. During your first year, you'll read Homer, Plato, Aristotle, Sappho, Aquinas, Ibsen, and other notable thinkers. In small seminars, you'll discuss these works with professors who are more than just lecturers; they are often your classroom friends.
While your perspectives and ideas will be respected, you'll be drawn into discussions with those whose views differ from your own. The spirit of open inquiry is fostered by our small classes, the 11.5-to-1 student-faculty ratio, and the fact that over 80% of our students live on campus.
Think of this as our warning label. If you think some things just shouldn't be questioned, you probably won't be happy at Hendrix. On the other hand, if you feel most alive when you're trying to get to the bottom of things, we predict you'll be as happy to find us as we are to find you.
Hendrix is Selective
The Hendrix student body is strong by any measure. More than 60% of Hendrix students rank in the top 10% of their high school classes, with the middle 50% having a range of 1140 - 1350 SAT scores and 25-30 ACT.
The Hendrix curriculum encourages individual initiative. Hendrix has one of the nation's largest undergraduate research programs. In addition, students can design their own majors, engage in independent study and internships, and study abroad.
There is an absence of pretense at Hendrix. Most students live on campus, and there are no fraternities or sororities. Hendrix students participate in more than sixty student organizations that cut across the normal lines of academic experience. Physics majors play lead roles in theatre productions; biology majors star on the basketball team; politics and religion majors prepare for medical school.
Located in central Arkansas, Hendrix students enjoy access to the cultural amenities of nearby Little Rock and to outdoor fun in the nearby Ozark Mountains. More than half of all students participate in intramural sports. At the intercollegiate level, Hendrix competes in the NCAA Division III Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Sports include baseball, basketball, cross-country, golf, tennis, soccer, softball, volleyball, swimming, track and field, and diving.
Hendrix Offers Top Value
The Princeton Review's America's Best Value Colleges lists Hendrix as one of the top four values of all colleges and universities in the nation.
The Fiske Guide to Colleges 2005 recognizes Hendrix as one of the twenty best values among all private colleges and universities. Hendrix earns this recognition by combining a low tuition with a nationally recognized liberal arts education.
You'll find Hendrix graduates in intriguing, challenging, and faraway places: 60% go to graduate or professional school within two years of graduation; more than 10% enter medical school. Others find jobs or pursue public service through the Peace Corps or Teach for America. Hendrix graduates regularly receive Watson Fellowships and Fulbright Scholarships.
Hendrix prepares you to be adaptable, analytical, resourceful, resilient, well rounded; not surprisingly, just the capacities a rapidly changing world demands of its leaders in every field.
