The goal of the Rwandan government in funding students to be educated outside of Rwanda is to ultimately no longer need to send students outside of Rwanda to be educated. Selected students are required to return to Rwanda to work. As many expatriate Rwandans already send resources back to Rwanda, the objective is for returning RPS students to share their experiences and knowledge, which will have a larger transformative impact on Rwandan society than dollars in remittances.
The goal of participating colleges and universities is to increase campus diversity, to provide American students with the opportunity to interact with students from this rich culture, and also to be part of the progress that Rwanda is making towards a full participant in the global economy. Further, students of consortium member institutes can participate in the Clinton Foundation funded study abroad and internship program.
