As a benefit to the participating schools, Hendrix has taken the lead in establishing
in partnership with the School for International Training a study abroad program
in Rwanda for American students interested in African studies. This program offers
the students 15 credit hours (History, Culture, and the Arts; Intensive Kinyarwanda
and Field Methods; Microfinance and Poverty Reduction; and Ecology and Sustainable
Development) and a 3-month internship in one of multiple participating private businesses,
NGO’s or governmental agencies in Rwanda.
The goal of this program is to provide students with a solid academic background
and in-country living experience prior to engaging in a hands-on internship in one
of their particular areas of interest.
Potential Internship Sites include:
- Office of the President and Prime Minister
- Rwandan National Ministries (especially Education, Health and Justice)
- Rwanda Development Board
- Kigali Institute of Education
- local governments, including mayoral offices
- Partners in Health
- Millennium Village Project
