CONWAY, Ark. (August 31, 2016) – Before starting her senior year at Hendrix College, Brooke Nelson ’17 spent her summer as an intern at Reader’s
Digest in New York City, where she got a close-up, hands-on look at the publishing industry.
Nelson, an international relations major and international business minor from Keller, Texas, received the prestigious summer position through the American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME)’s Magazine Internship Program, which places interns at well-known magazines in New York and
Washington, D.C.
ASME supports the interns with an initial three-day initial orientation before they go to their assigned workplace, followed by mentorship and learning opportunities throughout the summer.
Hendrix was one of only 24 colleges and universities represented by
ASME interns.
Nelson also received support from the
Hendrix-Murphy Foundation Programs in Literature and Language, which provides assistance for literary internships and externships, including mentored writing and editing positions with the Oxford American magazine, the national Phi Beta Kappa organization, and other literary institutions.
“Through the experience I gained this summer, I feel highly equipped with the tools I need to begin making notable changes to The
Profile, transforming Hendrix’s small, student-run publication into a platform for crafting important narratives and conversations on campus,” she said. “Furthermore, this internship has opened so many doors and opportunities that I would never have
dreamed just a year ago. I am now a more confident writer and editor, write with a stronger journalistic voice, and am seriously considering moving to New York after I graduate to begin my career there. All of that is possible because of ASME and the Murphy Foundation, both of which have given me the experience,
skills, and connections to make my wildest dreams come true.”
Outside of working hours, Nelson enjoyed living in New York City and says the experience was “vital to my personal growth and development not only as a journalist, but also as a Hendrix student and a citizen of the world.”
