Release or Renew Your IP Address

One common wifi troubleshooting "turn it off and on again" option is to release and renew your device's IP address on the network.

Windows Vista/7/8

  1. Click on Start.
  2. In Start Search, type in "cmd".
  3. Right click on Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
  4. If prompted, choose Continue.
  5. In the black box, type "ipconfig /release" and press Enter.
  6. Type "ipconfig /renew" and press Enter.

Windows 10

  1. Click on the Search icon in the taskbar and type in "cmd".
  2. Right click and choose Run as administrator.
  3. If prompted, choose Continue.
  4. In the black box, type "ipconfig /release" and press Enter.
  5. Type "ipconfig/renew" and press Enter.

Macintosh OS X 10.5+

  1. Click on the Apple menu.
  2. Click on System Preferences.
  3. Click on the Network icon.
  4. Make sure either Airport or Ethernet (depending on which you working with) is selected and click Advanced.
  5. Click on the TCP/IP tab.
  6. Click on the Renew DHCP button.
