Before
the conferral of degrees for this year’s graduates, the College presented a
posthumous Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree for the Rev. Jack Singleton ’63, a
Hendrix alumnus with a passion for justice whose most recent involvement with
the College was participating in the annual Dean’s Civil Rights Trip. This
student experience, funded by the Hendrix Odyssey Program, included stops at
museums, memorials, and historic sites. During this time spent with students, Singleton
would share with them his first-hand accounts relating to events of the
American civil rights movement, including his participation in the Selma
Ministers’ March.
Dean
of Students Jim Wiltgen spoke about his experience leading these trips
alongside Singleton and thanked the members of Singleton’s family who attended Commencement, including his wife, Carolyn, who received the award on his behalf. “He was a proud alumnus of Hendrix College,”
Wiltgen told them, “and he was the quintessential model of what it means to
live a life of accomplishment, integrity, service, and joy.”
