Chemistry Society honored

CONWAY, Ark. (Dec. 1, 2006) – Hendrix College’s chapter of the American Chemistry Society (ACS) Student Affiliates program will be honored at the 233rd ACS national meeting in Chicago on March 25, 2007.

The Hendrix chapter is one of only 75 of the more than 980 Student Affiliates chapters in the U.S. and Puerto Rico that will receive Honorable Mention chapter awards for their work in 2005-06 school year.

Chapters are selected for recognition based on an annual report of their activities. Hendrix’s ACS chapter sponsors a free, biweekly lecture series. The members also perform chemistry-related experiments for elementary school classrooms and judge middle and high school science competitions.

The Hendrix chapter, advised by David Hales, associate professor of chemistry, and Warfield Teague, professor of chemistry, consistently earns ACS awards. The Society praised Hales and Teague for their efforts as advisors, which “certainly represent the best in undergraduate science education and mentoring around the country.”

ACS officers for the 2005-06 year were President Jennifer Merritt of Houston, Texas; Vice President Mindy Eggert of Conway; Secretary Renee Riem of Memphis, Tenn.; Treasurer Catrin Mills of Hot Springs Village; Publicity Officer Janak Patel of Pine Bluff; Outreach Coordinator Courtney Rogers of Fayetteville; and Social Chair Kelly Robbins of North Little Rock.

Hendrix, founded in 1876, is a selective, residential, undergraduate liberal arts college emphasizing experiential learning in a demanding yet supportive environment. The college is among 150 colleges featured in the 2007 edition of the Princeton Review America's Best Value Colleges. Hendrix has been affiliated with the United Methodist Church since 1884.  For more information, visit www.hendrix.edu.
