Oxley, Grace - 20160404 - 13550364Grace Oxley ’16, art and English double major from Bryant, Arkansas, received a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to India.

The Fulbright English Teaching Assistant programs place grantees in schools overseas to supplement local English language instruction and to provide a native speaker presence in the classrooms.

“I am so excited and honored for this opportunity to teach, learn, and live in Germany through this program,” said Hull. “The Fulbright is the perfect medium for me to build long-lasting friendships, acquire teaching skills and experience, and help me further my career path in international education.”

“As I was going through this application process, I was reminded of the fact that Hendrix College is a place where the students are supported and encouraged to reach higher,” she added. “After having so many faculty and staff look at the numerous personal statement drafts I went through, to Miss Martha, one of our beloved cafeteria workers, giving me the Fulbright semifinalist article that she had cut out from the local newspaper, I am so glad that it was Hendrix College that got me here.”

“As a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant, I will assist in teaching English composition and conversation to middle school and high school students in India. I will also be involved in instructing students in art and writing clubs at my school,” Oxley said. “In my placement city, I also plan to teach an art class for members of my community. Over the duration of my grant period, I will undertake a personal photography project, documenting aesthetically interesting advertising or signage.”

“I am very grateful for professors like Maxine Payne, Dr. Pfau, Dr. Sarkar, Dr. Maupin, and Dr. Stuber for their support during the application process,” she added. “Being able to work closely with professors at Hendrix has been so important to my academic success and has prepared me to undertake this grant.”

Rachel Zweig ’16, chemistry and mathematics double major from Fayetteville, Arkansas, was recently selected for a 2016-2017 Fulbright U.S. Student Award to Spain. Zweig plans to do chemistry research at the Spanish National Research Council in Madrid, developing and analyzing new solvents for carbon dioxide removal from flue gas.
