Hendrix Professor to Chair ISA Human Rights Section

Whelan, chair of the Department of Politics and International Relations, was recently elected to a two-year term as Chair of the Human Rights Section of the International Studies Association (ISA).

“As Chair, I’ll be responsible for organizing and coordinating the work of the Section, which includes putting together human rights-related panels and roundtables for the annual meeting each Spring; liaising with other academic and professional associations for the joint Human Rights Conference the Section co-sponsors each Summer; and making four awards each year — two for Best Paper presented at the Annual Meeting; a Best Book Award, and a Distinguished Scholar Award,” Whelan said.

Whelan been involved with the Section since its founding in 2006, the year he joined the Hendrix faculty. He served as an At-Large member from 2007-2009 and as Section Vice Chair and Chair of the Best Book Award Committee last year. 

With 570 members, the Human Rights Section is the eighth largest of the 33 organized sections and caucus groups within ISA. The Section celebrated its 10th anniversary this year. Founded in 1959, ISA is the most widely known scholarly association in the field of international affairs with well over 6,000 members in North America and around the world.
