Alumna Discovers Joy of Teaching as Arkansas Teacher Corps Fellow

CONWAY, Ark. (February 22, 2016) – Hendrix College alumna Isabel Anderson ’13 went around the world to discover her love of teaching.

After she earned her psychology degree in 2013, Anderson traveled to Germany, where she worked as a nanny.

When she returned to Arkansas, she joined the Children's Rehabilitation Center of Easter Seals Arkansas as a behavior interventionist.

Offering behavioral support in classrooms for children with severe developmental disabilities, she learned how much she enjoyed teaching.

Anderson applied to the Arkansas Teacher Corps (ATC), a program that trains and licenses teachers regardless of their college background in education. In 2015, she was named an ATC fellow.

“Like Hendrix, I feel as if ATC has given me a community that supports me like a family and gives me the resources to feel empowered even in circumstances that are challenging.”

Anderson is now a fourth-grade teacher at Little Rock Preparatory Academy, a charter school that serves students from low-income families. With the help of high school student volunteers, she launched a tutoring program for her students. Through donorschoose.org, she raises funds to supply her classroom with educational tools to support after-school tutoring.

“I can say with confidence that joining ATC was one of the best decisions of my life (after deciding to go to Hendrix).”
