CONWAY, Ark. (April 20, 2015) – Three Hendrix students earned recognition for their research at the 99th annual Arkansas Academy of Science conference in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.
Jillian del Sol ’15 of Fayetteville, Arkansas, was awarded second place for her oral presentation in the undergraduate biology competition. Del Sol was mentored by Hendrix biology professor Dr. Matthew Moran and will be entering a doctoral program at University of Montana next fall.
“Jill has been working in my laboratory for three years, and it has been wonderful to see her develop as a scientist and a scholar,” Moran said. ‘It is great to see the Arkansas Academy of Sciences recognize her hard work.”
Hassan Karemera ’16 of Kayonza, Rwanda, and Julia Lefler ’17 of Hot Springs, Arkansas, were each awarded an undergraduate research grant by the Arkansas Academy of Science.
Both students will use their research grants to purchase laboratory supplies for their summer research project with Hendrix biology professor Dr. Ann Willyard.
“We can collect more samples” said Karemera.
“And we can afford to buy the lab supplies to analyze them!” added Lefler.
“Developing a research proposal for a competitive grant is an excellent entre into science for undergraduate students” said Willyard. “The Arkansas Academy of Science has long recognized the importance of supporting student researchers and these grants are one very important way they show that support.”
Karemera and Lefler will each give an oral presentation of their results at the 100thannual Arkansas Academy of Science conference next spring at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.
