CONWAY, Ark. (March 10, 2014) – Six Hendrix students participated in STEM Posters at the Capitol on Friday, March 7, in the state capitol rotunda. The event was originally scheduled for February 12 but was rescheduled due to inclement weather.
The program allowed undergraduate science students from Arkansas colleges and universities to interact with state legislators and their staff.
Student participants are:
- Macrina Butler, a senior from Austin, Texas, mentored by Dr. Jennifer Dearolf (biology)
- Gary DeClerk, a junior from Jacksonville, Ark., mentored by Dr. Chris Camfield (mathematics)
- Meredith McKinney, a senior from Batesville, Ark., mentored by Dr. Jennifer Dearolf (biology)
- Rebecca Meredith, a junior from Little Rock, Ark., mentored by Dr. Courtney Hatch (chemistry)
- Katie Powell, a senior from Conway, Ark., mentored by Dr. Jennifer Dearolf (biology)
- Claude Shyaka, a sophomore from Rwanda, mentored by Dr. Ann Wright (physics)
“We are very excited about this venue because students can share their excitement for science with their elected officials,” said Hendrix biology professor Dr. Ann Willyard, adding that out-of-state students will also be able to share their experiences
at Hendrix with local representatives. “Independent research is the ultimate engaged learning experience for students of the sciences, and this opportunity to discuss their own work with non-scientists will be a very powerful experience for each participant.”
