Athletics director promoted

CONWAY, Ark. (Sept. 21, 2006) - Danny Powell of Conway, Hendrix College athletics director since 2002, has been promoted to executive director of athletics, recreation and wellness at the college.

In addition to directing the college's 19 intercollegiate NCAA Division III athletics programs, Powell will oversee the operation and management of the new $20 million, 100,000 square-foot Wellness and Athletics Center, schedued for completion next summer. He will supervise the new director of wellness programs and facilities, a position that will be filled soon.

"Danny has done an outstanding job of directing and expanding intercollegiate athletics and intramurals programs at Hendrix over the past four years and has also demonstrated his commitment to making Conway a stronger community," said Hendrix President J. Timothy Cloyd. "He is the ideal person to guide the opening of the new center and to make sure it meets the needs of our campus community and the greater Conway community."

Only the sixth athletic director ever at Hendrix, Powell started his athletics career as an intern and then coordinator of athletic marketing and promotions at Northwestern State University of Louisiana. From there he served as assistant athletics director at Emporia State University in Kansas for four years and then as associate athletics director at the University of Central Arkansas.

Powell came to Hendrix in 1999 to serve as director of development. In that capacity, he was responsible for securing more than $2.5 million in gifts and grants to benefit college programs.

Powell earned a bachelor's degree in economics and English from the University of Arkansas in 1985 and a master's degree in sports management from Georgia Southern University in 1992.

He is immediate past president of the Conway Rotary Club and is a member of the Conway Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and the Conway Running Club Board. He serves on numerous committees at the First United Methodist Church of Conway and is a 2001 graduate of the Faulkner County Leadership Institute.

In addition, Powell volunteers as a "book buddy" to a sixth grade class at Ruth Doyle School and is a past member of the board of directors of the Boys and Girls Club of Faulkner County. He is a member of Team Orange Crush, a Conway running club which annually administers the Orange Crush Cross-Country Festival, which has donated race proceeds of more than $10,000 to the Women's Shelter of Faulkner County over the past three years.

Hendrix, founded in 1876, is a selective, residential, undergraduate liberal arts college emphasizing experiential learning in a demanding yet supportive environment.  Hendrix has been affiliated with the United Methodist Church since 1884.  For more information, visit www.hendrix.edu.
