CONWAY, Ark. (February 15, 2013) - Hendrix creative writing professor Dr. Tyrone Jaeger will join Pulitzer Prize-winning fiction writer Robert Olen Butler for a reading Thursday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. at Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss.
The program is part of "Workshopping the Workshop: A Roundtable on Creative Writing Pedagogy," which Jaeger and Millsaps College English professor Dr. Steve Kistulentz developed with the support of a $9,800 grant from the Associated Colleges of the South. The program will be held Thursday, Feb. 21, and Friday, Feb. 22, on the Millsaps campus in Jackson, Miss.
A Friday lunchtime reading will feature novelist and poet Alan Michael Parker and essayist and poet Sheryl St. Germain. Biographies of the readers can be found here.
Friday's discussion includes three parts:
- THE UNWORKSHOP, moderated by Robert Olen Butler and Alan Michael Parker. This session will discuss how certain alternative pedagogies to the workshop model may be better suited to the needs of ACS institutions and brainstorm methods of engaged learning and imagine what the future of the workshop looks like.
- BUILDING A LITERARY COMMUNITY, moderated by Kelly Grey Carlisle, Trinity University, and Andrew Leland, contributing editor of Believer Magazine and editor in residence at The Oakland Standard. Are there ways that member institutions can better serve the multiple communities to which we belong? What responsibility do writers and universities have to their resident communities?
- WRITING FROM THE FIELD, moderated by Sheryl St. Germain, director of the MFA Program, Chatham University, and Drew Swanson, Mellon Foundation Fellow in Environmental History at Millsaps College. This session will tackle how environmental writing, writing about place, and the expansion of interest in creative nonfiction might affect course offerings and methods of instruction.
