Overview of China Odyssey I

A study tour for ten Hendrix Students:

  • To three sites in China: Beijing, Harbin, Inner Mongolia
  • Combined with one day of orientation on July 2 on the Hendrix campus
  • The China Odyssey builds upon three themes in the Journeys class: Chinese Journeys (Confucianism and Buddhism), the Democratic Journeys, and the Post-Colonial Journeys

Four Kinds of Experiences:

  • Cultural Experiences (Buddhist, Taoist, Confucian) through visiting various cultural site in China, especially Beijing
  • Social Analysis as prompted by immersion in a rising industrial center in China, namely Harbin, combined with interviews with students, farmers, factory workers, and entrepreneurs in Harbin
  • Philosophical reflection on intellectual vision s now being considered by Chinese educators and intellectuals as they seek to bypass the problems of western modernity and move into a just, sustainable future.
  • East-West dialogues with Chinese students while taking a course with them on Process Philosophy, Globalization, and Higher Education in Harbin.
