Airness premiered at the 2017 Humana Festival for New American Plays at Actors’ Theatre Louisville. The play follows Nina, a novice air guitar competitor, who enters assuming it will be a simple feat to win. As she befriends a group of devoted air guitarists, she discovers the art form is
more than pretend. It is about finding yourself in the songs and performing with joy. It is about pursuing “airness.” Nina’s journey reminds us that everything we need to rock is already inside us.
Airness is directed by Marti Gobel, Murphy Visiting Theatre Director for 2022. Gobel’s time at Hendrix College is funded by programming support from the Hendrix-Murphy Foundation for Programs in Literature and Language. Murphy Visiting Theatre Directors spend six weeks as
artists-in-residence to direct a play and teach students about how directors interact with scripts, as well as ongoing dramaturgy and directing opportunities.
