Summer Semester in Costa Rica
Nine students are enrolled in the first Hendrix Summer Semester in Costa Rica. Faculty include Dr. Matt Moran, biology; Dr. Anne Goldberg, anthropology; and Dr. Lilian Contreras-Silva, Spanish. Students and faculty will live at a field station near tropical reserves in northwest Costa Rica and have significant interaction in a Spanish-speaking culture.
Entrepreneurship in China
Economics professors Dr. Keith Berry ’73 and Stephen Kerr ’76 takeeight students to China for 16 days to study the impact of Chinese culture on business and entrepreneurship practices. Shane Nunn ’87, who has been in business in China for more than a decade, will guide the group. As they travel, students will evaluate the feasibility of hypothetical entrepreneurial plans they have created that involve China. Experiencing art in Italy
Dr. Rod Miller will take 12 students to Italy for 10 days, where art historians and professional docents will lead them through art treasurers found in museums and churches in Milan, Venice, Ravenna, Florence, Pisa, Siena, Assisi and Rome. Sponsor: Odyssey.
Travel-study trip to Rwanda
Eleven students will travel to Rwanda with President J. Timothy Cloyd, Provost Robert Entzminger and Dr. Daniel Whelan. They will visit scenic and cultural sites, as they learn more about a nation recovering from genocide through a process of reconciliation and forgiveness. Sponsor: Odyssey.
South African Literature and Land
Dr. Carol West and Dr. Allison Shutt will take 10 students from their “African Film” and “History of Southern Africa” classes to South Africa in May. Students will get a feel for the country’s writers, literature, films and history by experiencing the geography and culture first-hand. Sponsors: Odyssey and the Hendrix-Murphy Foundation Programs in Literature and Language.
Mission trip to Tanzania
Dr. Anne Goldberg and Dr. Patty Bruininks will travel with 10 students to Tanzania where they will volunteer at the Baobab Home, an orphanage for babies orphaned by AIDS and poverty. The trip will also include time for cultural and recreational activities, including a soccer tournament – the Hendrix Cup. Sponsor: Hendrix-Lilly Vocations Initiative.
