Hendrix students named Fulbright Award semi-finalists

March 9, 2026 – Hendrix College students Cecelia Schneider ’25 and Charlotte Miller ’26 were named semifinalists for Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships (ETAs) in Spain and Mongolia, respectively.

Schneider and Miller were recommended by the Fulbright National Screening Committee to proceed to the final selection phase. The award process is administered by the Institute for International Education in New York. Final award determinations will be made by the Fulbright Commission in Spain and U.S. embassy staff in Mongolia and will be announced later this spring.

Schneider, who graduated with distinction in 2025, is currently overseas on a Watson Fellowship.

The College’s Honors Committee mentors Fulbright applicants and helps them identify how their Hendrix and life experiences combine to form outstanding English teaching assistants.

“We are very proud that two of our students have progressed to the semifinalist stage of the Fulbright award process,” said Britt Anne Murphy, chair of the Honors Committee. “The success of our students, both Cecelia as a Watson Fellow and alumna, and Charlotte as a current senior, points to how a liberal arts education prepares students for experiences abroad. Hendrix Odyssey experiences and rigorous coursework make our students very competitive for national scholarships. Our foreign language faculty and Fulbright Advisor Daniel Edquist-Whelan are to be commended for fostering talent in our students and providing pathways towards cultural exchange and leadership.”

The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. The primary source of funding for the Fulbright Program is an annual appropriation made by the U.S. Congress to the U.S. Department of State. Participating governments, host institutions, corporations, and foundations in foreign countries and in the United States also provide direct and indirect support.

“The competition for these awards is formidable. Being a semifinalist is a notable accomplishment,” said Hendrix’s Fulbright Program Advisor and Professor of Politics Dr. Daniel Edquist-Whelan. “We’re eager to see Cecelia and Charlotte named as finalists later this spring.”

Recipients of Fulbright grants are selected based on academic or professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential in their fields. The Program operates in over 160 countries worldwide. For more information about the Fulbright Program, visit https://fulbrightprogram.org/.
