Hendrix students bring Arkansas leaders to campus for conversation on voting, civic engagement

April 3, 2026 – As another pivotal election season approaches, Hendrix College students are creating space for meaningful dialogue about the impact of young voters and the future of civic participation.

On April 16, student organizations Sisters in Solidarity (SIS) and Young Democrats will host “Your Voice Matters: The Power of Voting and Civic Engagement,” a dynamic panel discussion featuring prominent Arkansas leaders who are shaping today’s political landscape.

Panelists include U.S. Senate candidate Hallie Shoffner, U.S. House candidate Chris Jones, and Arkansas gubernatorial candidate Sen. Fred Love, who will share their perspectives on leadership, public service, and the growing influence of student and first-time voters. The conversation will explore why civic participation matters, how young adults can make their voices heard, and what engagement looks like beyond Election Day.

On behalf of both student organizations, SIS President Ma'Kyia Kamanga and Young Democrats President Leah Krueger shared the following statement: “As students at Hendrix, we are committed to fostering a culture of civic engagement where every voice is valued and every vote matters. This event was inspired by our shared mission to serve the community, specifically the Hendrix community, by creating inclusive spaces and empowering students to shape their future through civic engagement.

“We hope this gathering creates meaningful conversation, encourages continued involvement and strengthens civic responsibility. Ultimately, this gathering offers the opportunity to converse with powerful leadership in the pursuit of a more inclusive future made possible through the power of voting and civic engagement.”

The event will take place Thursday, April 16, from 12–1 p.m. in Reves Recital Hall inside the Trieschmann Fine Arts Building (building 18b on the Hendrix campus map), with a reception immediately following the discussion.

Hosted by SIS and Young Democrats and supported by the Hendrix Office of Community and Belonging, the event is free and open to the public. Community members, students, and anyone interested in the future of civic engagement are encouraged to attend.
