September 4, 2025 – This summer, Hendrix College
Department of Music Chair and Associate Professor of Music Dr. Gretchen Renshaw
presented at the 85th Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management in
Copenhagen, Denmark.
In the Fall of 2023, Renshaw led the Hendrix
Wind Ensemble in a concert called SUSTAIN, which focused on the principles of
educating the campus community about sustainability mindset principles. The
following academic year she was able to dive deeper into this through writing
her chapter, “The SUSTAIN Concert: Arts, Ripple Effects, and the Sustainability
Mindset Principles,” which is projected to be published later this year in the
upcoming book “The Power of Arts-Based Pedagogies: Transforming Mindsets to
Shape Our Future.”
At the Transforming
Mindsets: The Power of Arts-Based Pedagogy in Education for Sustainability professional
development workshop, Renshaw had the opportunity to discuss the themes and
topics outlined in her written work.
“I
am so grateful for the opportunity to work with students in exploring how their
music and art making can make a real difference in the world – and in this
case, on an international scale,” said Renshaw. “The SUSTAIN Concert is just
one example of how we can use the power of a liberal arts education to make
interdisciplinary connections that serve our communities and the natural
environment.”
This
workshop won the award from the Management Education and Development Division
of the Academy of Management for “Best Professional Development Workshop in
Management Education and Development,” further highlighting the work of the
Hendrix Wind Ensemble on an international stage in fields extending outside the
confines of music.
