Appointment will have wide-reaching impact on student learning of cutting-edge scientific literature
August 6, 2025 – Dr. Andrea Duina, professor of biology at Hendrix College, has been appointed Associate Editor for the GENETICS journal, a leading publication of the Genetics Society of America. Duina will serve on the editorial team for the journal’s Primers section, which supports undergraduate education by offering resources that bridge cutting-edge genetics research and classroom learning.
“I am very honored and excited to join the GENETICS Editorial Board as Associate Editor,” said Duina.
Currently, there are two types of Primer articles: Research Primers, which facilitate student understanding of current research articles published in GENETICS, and Model Organism Primers, which serve as great introductions to commonly used organisms in research laboratories.
“This position is truly a great fit for me as it will allow me to integrate my two passions in science – research and teaching – in a way that will impact many individuals,” added Duina. “Primer articles are a great way to make complex ideas accessible and meaningful for students.”
Duina has led a thriving undergraduate research program at Hendrix since 2004 that leverages the experimental power of the organism Saccharomyces cerevisiae, commonly known as baker’s yeast, to understand fundamental aspects of how genes are utilized by cells. Duina’s research program was initially funded by the Arkansas BRIN Program (now known as Arkansas INBRE), which promotes biomedical research and education across the state, and has since been supported by several grants from the National Science Foundation.
As an educator, Duina emphasizes student engagement with authentic scientific inquiry, regularly incorporating primary literature and inquiry-based learning in his courses. His new role as Associate Editor at GENETICS will help broaden his impact on science education beyond Hendrix and into the larger educational landscape.
