March 11, 2026 — Hendrix College’s Center for Civic
Leadership in Arkansas (CCL) is now accepting applications for the second
cohort of its Civic Leadership Scholars Program, a selective, cohort-based
initiative designed to cultivate students’ commitment to civic engagement,
public service, and leadership. Applications are due Tuesday, March 17, at 5
p.m.
Housed at Hendrix College and designed to benefit communities
across the state, the Center for Civic Leadership in Arkansas brings together
students from all majors who share an interest in civic participation and
leadership development. Through mentorship, specialized coursework, and
experiential learning, the program prepares students to become thoughtful
leaders and engaged citizens.
The Civic Leadership Scholars Program is open to any Hendrix student with
a demonstrated passion for civic engagement and leadership, regardless of
academic discipline. Students typically apply during the spring of their first
year, allowing Scholars to participate in the program throughout
their remaining three years at Hendrix.
Selected students receive a variety of academic and co-curricular
opportunities designed to deepen their understanding of civic leadership while
building professional experience and connections.
“The Center for Civic Leadership in Arkansas connects students to a
network of Arkansans who can
help students develop as leaders and make a
meaningful difference in their communities,” said CCL Director Delphia Shanks.
“Through this program, students gain the knowledge, mentorship, and real-world
experiences that prepare them to engage thoughtfully in civic life and
contribute to the future of Arkansas.”
Program benefits include:
- A $5,000
study-project allowance to support approved public service experiences
related to civic engagement and leadership
- Opportunities
to pursue deeper study of civic leadership beyond the classroom
- Specialized
courses taught by visiting Professors of the Practice
- Engagement
opportunities with distinguished visitors including elected officials,
policy experts, advocates, scholars, and community leaders
-
Special
distinction upon graduation
-
Membership in
a collaborative community of scholars focused on leadership, professional
development, and public service
Civic Leadership Scholars are expected to
actively participate in the Hendrix civic engagement community by
attending monthly meetings, supporting CCL events, completing a course
taught by a Professor of the Practice, and participating in three
civic engagement or leadership co-curricular experiences.
Through intensive mentorship and hands-on learning, Scholars develop
their civic identity while gaining experience in community organizing, dialogue
across differences, social change initiatives, and charitable work. The program
also helps students strengthen essential professional skills such as
communication, negotiation, leadership, and social analysis while preparing
them for graduate school and careers in public service and related fields.
