Harvard's Mitter to lecture at Hendrix

March 11, 2026 – Hendrix College will welcome internationally recognized historian and China expert Rana Mitter for the W.C. Buthman Lecture on Thursday, March 19, at 6 p.m. in Mills Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

Mitter’s talk, titled “How China’s Global Future is Shaped by Its Past,” explores how China’s modern history informs its current global role and its evolving relationship with the United States. The lecture will examine key issues shaping U.S.-China relations, including trade, technology, Taiwan, and the lasting influence of historical movements and political thought on China’s present-day policies.

Mitter is the S.T. Lee Chair in U.S.-Asia Relations at the Harvard Kennedy School and a widely published scholar on modern China. He is the author of several award-winning books, including “Forgotten Ally: China’s World War II” and “China’s Good War: How World War II is Shaping a New Nationalism.” His work has appeared in publications such as Foreign Affairs, Harvard Business Review, The Guardian, and the Financial Times.

In addition to his academic work, Mitter is a frequent commentator on Chinese politics and international affairs and has participated in global forums including the World Economic Forum at Davos. He is also the recipient of the 2020 Medlicott Medal for Service to History from the UK Historical Association and is a Fellow of the British Academy.

Established in 2000, the W.C. Buthman Endowed Lectureship brings distinguished scholars and public intellectuals to Hendrix whose expertise addresses pressing global issues. The program reflects the College’s commitment to preparing students to engage thoughtfully with complex international challenges and to participate in a global community.
