This course explores different geographical areas in France as seen through an examination of the variety of French accents, foods, architectural styles, folklores, and legends with emphasis on the history of the French language (including L’Académie Française, language discrimination, inclusive language) and influences from neighboring countries. This course is taught in English. French students read the texts in French and other students in translation. (Note: This course will not count toward one of the 200-level French electives required in the Major and Minor)

This class examines the existentialist trend in French theory and fiction. This course is taught in English and is cross-listed as FREN 202. Students enrolling in this course work entirely in English with the expectation that student knowledge of literary theory is at the second-year level.

We survey the events and questions leading up to the Holocaust and attempt to place them in a historical, religious, and political frame. Through the texts of witness-authors, we consider facets of the human tragedy that the Holocaust constitutes and how it was lived on a daily basis. The course thus studies individual experiences of the historical event that remains the paradigm of genocides of the XXth century. *Taught in English. This course studies the various theories pertaining to the translation of literature. Cross-listed as FREN 461. Prerequisite: Students should have completed the LA language capacity requirement in any language.

This course studies the Spanish Civil War using films and texts set during this period. We study not only what happened in Spain from 1936-1939, but also the circumstances that led to the war and the long-term consequences of this conflict.
