German:
Language learning goals:
The acquisition
of the vocabulary and grammatical structures necessary to
- ask
and answer a wide variety of questions in German
- express
simple thoughts and ideas in short conversations
- converse
on a variety of everyday topics such as hobbies, personal interests, and
college life
- read
a variety of short German texts for basic content
Cultural
learning goals:
Familiarity with basic information about contemporary Germany,
including the educational system, leisure activities, family life, food,
tourism, social questions, etc.
Hebrew:
Upon
completion of the Introduction to Biblical Hebrew sequence, students will
- read
and pronounce Biblical Hebrew fluidly
- understand
the essentials of Hebrew grammar and syntax
- translate
extended narrative texts from the Hebrew Bible
- translate
short poetic texts from the Hebrew Bible
- know
how to use standard lexicographical aids (both print and digital)
Japanese:
- Develop
fundamental skills in and knowledge of the Japanese language, including:
- Reading/Writing:
Read and write the hiragana syllabary
and 25 kanji;
- Listening:
Understand classroom instructions and learned vocabulary in conversation;
- Speaking:
Perform basic everyday exchanges, such as classroom discussion, asking
for/giving directions and shopping; produce accurate pronunciation, accent, and
intonation;
- Vocabulary:
Recognize and produce basic vocabulary related to everyday topics;
- Grammar:
Demonstrate an understanding of basic syntax, conjugation, and tense.
- Demonstrate
a basic understanding and appreciation of Japanese culture and its
relationships to language, including how Japanese conceptions of age, status,
gender, and in/out-group affect linguistic exchanges.
ESOL:
- Develop
the English language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing)
necessary for successful participation in academic courses at Hendrix.
- Develop
a basic understanding of American history, culture, and society.
