CONWAY, Ark. (April 18, 2017) – The Hendrix College Choir, under the direction of Dr. Andrew Morgan and guest
conductor Dr. J.D. Burnett of the University of Georgia, will
perform its spring concert titled Down Deep: Oppression, Reconciliation, and
Justice on Thursday, April 27, at 7:30 p.m., in Staples Auditorium.
The program, which
explores themes of social justice and music's ability to act as a force for
change in the world, will feature the world premiere of Down Deep by
Dominick DiOrio, Associate Professor of Music at Indiana University. The work
explores the legacy and impact of the 1957 desegregation of Little Rock Central
High School, using quotes from four of the Little Rock Nine.
The first part of the program will also
include a panel discussion featuring Dr. Morgan, Hendrix Chief Diversity
Officer Dr. Dionne Jackson, politics professor Dr. Jay Barth, and education
professor Liz Lundeen. The panel will focus on the history and legacy of the Little
Rock Central High School desegregation and civil rights in Arkansas.
Additional music
includes music by Gwyneth Walker, Frank Ticheli, Michael Tippett, and Estonian
composers Pärt Uusberg and Cyrillus Kreek.
