CONWAY, Ark. (November 7, 2016) — The Hendrix College Wind
Ensemble will present its Fall Concert titled "War and Peace" on
Monday, Nov. 14, at 7:30 p.m., in Staples Auditorium.
The program features music exploring either war or peace and
juxtaposes them to examine how these elements coexist - both in music and the
world as a whole.
After the Overture in
B-flat by Caesar Giovannini to begin the program, the ensemble will perform
Daniel Bukvich's Symphony No. 1: In
Memoriam - Dresden 1945, a musical depiction of the Allied bombing attack
on Dresden near the end of World War II. The Symphony will be followed by Franz
Biebl's Ave Maria with Hendrix Choir
members Noah Adams and Joshua Beggs joining the ensemble for this piece.
The second half of the program includes J.S. Bach's Fugue in G Minor. Next, will be Elliot
Del Borgo's masterpiece Do Not Go Gentle
Into That Good Night, which is based on the Dylan Thomas poem of the same
title and explores the idea of not going peacefully into death.
The program closes with William Schuman's Chester, which is based on William
Billings' famous hymn and marching song of the American Revolution.
The ensemble will be joined by actors from Hendrix's Theatre
Arts and Dance Department to speak the texts on which several of the pieces are
based.
The performance is sponsored by the Hendrix College Music
Department and is free and open to the public.
