CONWAY, Ark. (September 12, 2016) – Hendrix College senior Barrett Goodwin '17 recently
represented Hendrix at College Debate 16, a gathering of college
students from all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
This summer, Goodwin, a politics
major from Little Rock, Arkansas, was selected to be a delegate for College Debate 2016, a first-of-its-kind initiative was created by Dominican University of California, a
Voter Education Partner of the Commission on
Presidential Debates.
“We met at Dominican University in San Rafael, California,
and we collectively decided that the issues of immigration, foreign policy,
social justice/civil rights, the economy, and education were the most important
areas of concern for millennial voters,” Goodwin said. “Then, we came up with
three questions each for these issues. At a town hall discussion live streamed
by ABC News Digital and MTVU, we as a group chose the five questions, one per
issue, that we wanted to present via social media platforms to the moderators
of the upcoming Presidential and Vice-Presidential debates.”
“These five questions illustrate the issues that we care
about as young voters. It was great to meet students from around the country
who are as passionate about politics and policy as I am,” he said. “It just
goes to show that, far from being cynical and disengaged, my generation is
actually very much tuned in to the major debates going on in our country. We as
an incredibly large voting bloc have a voice that deserves to be heard.”
