Twenty Hendrix Sophomores Named Murphy Scholars in Literature and Language

murphy scholars groupCONWAY, Ark. (November 4, 2015) – Twenty Hendrix College sophomores were selected as Murphy Scholars in Literature and Language.

The 20 members of the inaugural class of Murphy Scholars will explore literature and language at a more intensive level by participating in designated study, travel, research, and service experiences in literature and language between now and their graduation in May 2018.

“I’m quite happy about the quality and range of this group,” said Hope Coulter, creative writing professor and interim director of the Hendrix-Murphy Foundation Programs in Literature and Language. “They represent some 25 majors in all three areas of study and have strong, varied interest in and aptitude for literature and language.”

“We had a tremendous response from the sophomore class; 14 percent of them applied to become Murphy Scholars,” Coulter added. “We had such a great applicant pool in terms of both size and quality that we decided to bring in 20 scholars this year – twice as many as we had planned. The Hendrix-Murphy Foundation Board has enthusiastically backed our plan. Once we grow to capacity, we hope to bring in 30 Scholars every year.”
