For students wishing to become more proficient in Chinese language.
Heilongjiang University is one of the premier universities of northeast China. Located in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, which has a population of nine million. Due to Heilongjiang’s fine reputation for teaching Chinese to foreign students, the University draws students from many countries.
Harbin is also famous for its winter ice festival.
Students studying at Heilongjiang will take four intensive Chinese language courses at the appropriate level (including beginning). One of these will be a course on reading Chinese. Students will also take a contemporary Chinese culture course. Successful completion of all five courses will equate to four Hendrix course credits.
Language of Instruction
The language courses are taught in Chinese. The culture course is taught in English.
Grades will not appear on each student's Hendrix transcript, and do NOT figure into the cumulative GPA. Students who complete each of the five Heilongjiang credits with a "C" or better will earn four Hendrix credits.
Students will pay normal Hendrix tuition, room, and board. Each individual student is responsible for travel and visa costs, and spending money.
Normally, all financial aid applies, including Hendrix scholarships. Students are encouraged to verify their situation through the Hendrix Financial Aid Office.
Students are required to secure a Chinese student visa to study in China. This can be done by visiting a Chinese consulate in person or through a visa services courier. The Office of International Programs may assist with the process.
Students will live on campus in double rooms with cable, internet, refrigerator, and telephone. Meals are provided in cafeterias on campus.
The fall semester at Heilongjiang runs from late August to early January. The spring semester is from February to June. Students can attend either semester, or the full academic year.
