What kind of computer do I need?

When it comes to buying a computer for college, what computer would suit your needs best? Whether you want a PC or a Mac, here are some options to consider. You have the option of whether you want a laptop or a desktop, but for college campus a laptop is much more convenient. There is mobile access to the Hendrix wireless around campus for use with a laptop.

Not a Chromebook

We do NOT recommend purchasing a Google Chromebook due to its limited drive space and the almost constant need for Internet connectivity.  Additionally, you may encounter department-specific software or research with demanding processing capacity that the Chromebook may not be able to handle.

For Choosing a PC

For your PC, you have the choice of operating system offered by Windows, the most current being Windows 11. Windows 7, 8, Vista and XP versions are not recommended. For more information on Microsoft computer products https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/view-all-devices.

For Choosing a Mac

Apple offers a choice of laptops that are suitable for the college campus. One of the things to consider if buying an Apple product is the nearest service center is about 25 miles away in Little Rock. For more information on Apple computer products visit  https://www.apple.com/store.

Please talk to your admission counselor if purchasing a laptop is a challenge to your resources.

The above specifications should allow a student to get through all four years of college without having to worry about upgrading their computer during their college years.

Remember that, while you are a Hendrix student, you have free, licensed access to Microsoft365 including broad set of Office software including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams.
