French Program

FRENCH 450 - Contemporary French Literature

This course presents significant works and movements of the twentieth century, with emphasis on the novel. We will study pre-war literature, such as works by Alain-Fournier and Marcel Proust; existentialist literature, such as works by Albert Camus and Jean-Paul Sartre; and the nouveau roman, in works such as the novels of Marguerite Duras. Coursework will include discussion, reading critical articles outside of class, and exams and/or a term paper. Prerequisite: at least French 210, Intermediate Composition and Conversation.
