Malware Protection

Let's face it: We all get malware from time to time. Having the right defenses in place can protect your computer and sensitive personal information from being compromised.

NOTE: If your device is registering suspicious traffic that indicates a possible malware infection, then it will be disconnected from the Hendrix network until the infection has been removed. You will have to bring your device to the Help Desk or a third party to verify your device is safe (and provide a receipt if done by third party) before it is allowed back on the network.

What is malware?

Malware is short for malicious software, and is generally used as an umbrella term for any kind of software that is designed to disrupt computer operations, gather sensitive information, gain access to private computer systems, display unwanted advertising, etc. Things such as viruses, worms, adware, and spyware are all examples of malware.

How can I protect my device(s) from malware?

There are many software solutions and services available, both free and paid, that defend against malware on a variety of devices and operating systems (sometimes referred to simply as an "OS"). Below are resources for devices that use a Windows OS, a Mac OS, an Android OS, and an iOS.

Mobile Devices

NOTE: The Hendrix College Help Desk does not provide support for the removal of malware from mobile devices. The following resources are provided as a courtesy to our students and faculty/staff and do not imply support of these products.

Android

For Android phones and tablets, the following security packages may be of use to you:

iOS

Due to the nature of iOS and how Apple devices are run from a security standpoint, there are no real antivirus/antimalware programs for iOS. However, we recommend using services like Apple's iCloud to create backups of your phone or tablet's content in the event of a malfunction of any kind.
