Hendrix College President Karen Petersen named Business Executive of the Year by Conway Area Chamber of Commerce

March 25, 2026 – The Conway Area Chamber of Commerce has named Hendrix College President Dr. Karen Petersen as its Business Executive of the Year. The prestigious award recognizes leadership that drives institutional excellence while fostering significant economic and community growth within the region.

“Dr. Karen Petersen exemplifies the kind of leadership that strengthens not only an institution, but an entire community,” said Brad Lacy, president and CEO of the Conway Area Chamber of Commerce. “Her vision for Hendrix College and her commitment to partnership have helped create meaningful opportunities that benefit students, businesses, and the future of Conway. We are proud to recognize her with this honor.”

A Catalyst for Community Growth

Under Petersen’s leadership, the long-standing connection between Hendrix College and the city of Conway has grown stronger. A primary example is the continued evolution of The Village at Hendrix. Working closely with local leaders, Petersen has overseen the growth of new and existing businesses and the establishment of a new entertainment district. These developments strengthen the original vision and further establish the area as a welcoming hub where campus life and the Conway community come together, directly boosting local economic activity.

“Hendrix and Conway have always been dependent upon one another for success,” said Petersen. “The Chamber’s recognition reflects the strength of that relationship and a shared belief in what we can build together. We are preparing students for lives of purpose, and that work is stronger because of the partnership we have in Conway.”

Future-Ready Education

Petersen is also leading a transformation of the Hendrix academic experience. This fall, the College will launch a new initiative that integrates meaningful professional experience into the liberal arts curriculum. This approach ensures that graduates are not only well-educated but are also ready to enter the workforce with the confidence and purpose required by a rapidly changing society.

Long-Term Institutional Strength

Further securing the College’s future, Petersen recently announced a $10 million matching challenge from the Windgate Foundation. This historic gift is designed to strengthen the Hendrix endowment, ensuring long-term financial stability and expanding scholarship access for future generations of students.

As Hendrix College moves toward its next 150 years, Petersen remains focused on a dual mission: preparing students for meaningful lives and serving as a cornerstone for the region’s continued prosperity.
